The LA Rams are in a surprising dog fight in their Week 7 contest against the Detroit Lions. The Lions, of course, just happen to be the team where quarterback Matthew Stafford had played for 12 NFL seasons. So it is particularly fitting that in the game against the Lions, Stafford has thrown his 300th touchdown pass, a significant milestone.
That amounts to Stafford’s 18th touchdown pass of the year. For comparison purposes, that is just two shy of 20, the number of Jared Goff’s total touchdown passes in 2020. And for more comparison purposes? Stafford’s 18th touchdown of the season will keep him among the Top-Five NFL quarterbacks in scoring.
The Rams are heavily favored in this one. But the Detroit Lions special teams are ruining the script. They have already succeeded at an onside kick, and have successfully faked two punts to move the chains.
The LA Rams are playing a conservative game against an opponent that has thrown all conventions and playbooks out the window. It’s a bit surprising because it’s quite clear that the Lions are going to unload their entire bag of tricks to win this one. Unfortunately, the Rams have done almost nothing to stop them from doing so.
Is this the best of the LA Rams offense? The Detroit Lions defense is not good, and yet the Rams have struggled to put up points. The Rams’ special teams can claim partial responsibility. On three occasions where the offense was about to get the football, the Lions’ special teams created a fumble with an onside kickoff and moved the chains on two fake punts. Three separate possessions that never got to Matthew Stafford.
The Rams were trailing by the score of 19-17. The lopsided home favorite LA Rams are trailing as the team nears the fourth quarter, once more against a winless opponent. In a game when the Rams quarterback hits a personal landmark 300th touchdown, it seems that the Rams simply failed to take this game seriously.
Matthew Stafford will need to win this one from behind. So far, the Lions have been just enough on offense, defense to frustrate the Rams. Meanwhile, the Lions’ special teams have outright embarrassed the Rams at SoFi Stadium. Now, Matthew Stafford must direct a come-from-behind victory.
And just as this article goes to publication, Matthew Stafford throws his third TD pass and the Rams convert a Two-point conversion
