25 – Detroit Lions

Yes, the Detroit Lions are not exactly setting the NFL on fire.  But their RB/KR Godwin Igwebuike made an impression in the Week 7 contest against the LA Rams. He returned just one kickoff but did so with fluid ease of motion that resulted in a 27-yard return that seemed to happen with no effort.

He stands 6-foot-0 and weighs 212-pounds, and he is entering his third NFL season. Until now, he has been essentially a special teams player who covered punts and kickoffs. But this year, the Detroit Lions have used as a kick returner.

In seven games in 2021, he has returned seven kickoffs for a total of 136 yards, which comes out to an average of 19.6 per return. But his last three returns have averaged 27.0 yards. From what I saw of him in Week 7, he can do better yet.

The LA Rams are still very much unsettled with the kick return duties. The team had hoped to develop running back Jake Funk for that role, but his season-ending injury has forced the team back to the drawing board. Godwin Igwebuike could be the solution for the Rams kick return duties
