5 – Kansas City Chiefs

If there was ever a more fitting set of circumstances to cite ‘Be careful what you wish for, you just may get it.’, then the chain of events that has placed offensive center Austin Blythe on the Kansas City Chiefs roster would be it.

Through the 2020 NFL season, Blythe was the starting offensive center for the LA Rams. In 2021, he is a bench-warmer. The LA Rams made a low ball offer to Blythe in an attempt to re-sign him to the team on a one-year deal. But he took an offer to join the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs then drafted a center, demoting Blythe to the bench in the process.

There is absolutely no doubt that had Blythe re-signed with the Rams that the starting offensive center position that he had vacated would still be his. But we will never know, as that is not how the events played out.

Still, there is no reason why the Rams could not trade with the Chiefs now to Austin Blythe back this season. Not only would that help the Rams’ depth on the offensive line, but would provide a proven backup for the Rams at a position where communication and familiarity are crucial.

The Rams offensive line is playing quite well so far this year. But it would be a nice insurance policy to have Blythe on the Rams bench rather than the Chiefs bench.
