Will LA Rams trade for QB Matthew Stafford be viewed as franchise’s best?

What is the cost in terms of NFL currency to trade for the best quarterback in the NFL Draft? We know that the price can be heavy indeed because those top picks have historically cost multiple first-round draft picks. Now, factor in the ‘he’s already a really good NFL quarterback’ component of former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.

And yet, when push-came-to-shove, the LA Rams ante’d up and offered up the winning bid by packaging QB Jared Goff, a 2021 third-round pick, a 2022 first-round pick, and a 2023 first-round pick. So what have the Rams ended up with as a result?

The LA Rams coaches and front office knew that Stafford’s potential in the LA Rams offense would be rather spectacular. But I’m not so certain that they had any clue that he could be this good.

The Rams offense has once more become one of the elite scoring offenses of the NFL, a huge improvement over the inept offense that slumped to the bottom third of the NFL just one season ago. But perhaps the best news yet? Stafford has been so good so far, that Matthew Stafford has played his way to the bench in two of the LA Rams games. His leads have been deemed so ahead by the coaching staff, that Stafford and many of the Rams starters have sat out the final quarter against both the New York Giants and the Houston Texans.

I wouldn’t look for anyone to be hitting the showers early in the month of November 2021. While the Rams only play three games (thanks to a Week 11 BYE week, the Rams opponents are the Tennesse Titans (6-2), the always difficult San Francisco 49ers (3-4), and the Green Bay Packers (7-1). If the Rams end the month of November with nine wins, that should be considered a huge plus.

Thanks to the way QB Matthew Stafford is playing, I think that the Rams can do that.

It’s not about individual statistics for Stafford. It’s simply about being the best player on the football field in any given Gameday. By doing that often enough, you end up being the best in the league.

Will the 2021 trade for quarterback Matthew Stafford rank among the All-Time best trades in franchise history? Who’s to say? But if the LA Rams win Super Bowl LVI in SoFi Stadium? Well, let’s just agree to revisit that question if they do.
