Why did LA Rams sign WR Odell Beckham Jr.? Ask the players.
By Bret Stuter
Okay, the LA Rams just signed veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Already the feedback is mixed among fans. Some believe that the LA Rams did not need to add a new offensive weapon. Others believe that after waiving DeSean Jackson and losing Tutu Atwell and Jacob Harris to season-ending injuries, the Rams needed to reinforce their roster.
This is an offense that will use four wide receivers on one play. So it came down to whether or not fans were comfortable with having that WR4 on the field being Ben Skowronek or Odell Beckham Jr.. Or perhaps it was never up to the fans at all? You see, the players have embraced the idea of adding Odell Beckham Jr. to this roster since news broke that he would likely be released by the Cleveland Browns.
Now, let’s discuss why the LA Rams needed to sign him.
You fight the fights that need fighting
When the LA Rams lost to the Green Bay Packers in the Divisional Rounds of the NFL Playoffs, there were a lot of emotions that rushed to the surface in the face of the final scoreboard. But perhaps we failed to highlight the one emotion that rocked the team most of all.
Doubt.
Was the team as ‘in’ as the players who were working out many hours on a daily basis to win it all? Did the team have the same focused mentality to endure for a championship run? Had the organization done everything in its power to win while the current stars were still in their prime, could still influence the outcome of a game? Now we know the answer.
Oh, hell yes.
In life, you learn that you do not simply fight the fights that you can win. You fight the fights that need fighting. To ensure that the players on the LA Rams remain confident in the team’s willingness to do what it takes to win, the team has to do what it takes to win.
The LA Rams are attempting to do something very special indeed. Compete in and win the Super Bowl in their home stadium. This is beyond a once-every ten years opportunity. This is beyond a lifetime opportunity. This chance may never come again.
Forget the pressure that some cite that is on the LA Rams now. That pressure has been there from the moment that the NFL announced that Super Bowl LVI would be played at SoFi Stadium. The players of this team have been doing everything that they can to win at home this year.
Now, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the LA Rams have proven to those players that they are as well.
You fight the fights that need fighting. The LA Rams have fought well.
