The LA Rams organization and fans that lovingly support the team are taking completely different paths right now. After all, they are standing on different sides of the fence. The Rams organization is aware of everything that goes on leading up to NFL GameDay. The Rams fans only get to see the results of that preparation.
For the team, it has been a trek of calm, cool, intellectual analysis. It’s a repeated mantra of “We need to clean that up” and “We’ve got to do a better job of (fill in the blank)” when pressed by the media. It’s a droning narrative that is anything but passionate, translating into a response on the football field that is anything but tough and physical.
Losing three games in a row will do that to a football team.
The LA Rams fans are taking a different approach. They’re pissed, and they don’t care who knows it or hears from them. Their anger and vitriol are so heated and passionate that their comments caused a three-minute delay/distraction from head coach Sean McVay as he read the thoughts of fans during his Coach McVay Show’s weekly podcast.
Fans boiling over now
Fans are tired of hollow promises, emotionless play, soft football, mental errors, and the frequent fundamental flaws that have crippled the team in the throes of a three-game losing streak. If the team had found a way to fix things, to regroup and find a way to negate their opponents repeating the same ole strategy, perhaps their mood would be vastly different and improved.
The pattern is the same. The Rams turn over the football. Their opponent scores a touchdown. The Rams come out to answer back and throw a pick-six. Then, the opponent merely needs to play a ball-control offense and defend the pass. Second verse, same as the first.
Do fans have a point? Does everything get ‘fixed’ with the moment if the team fires defensive coordinator Raheem Morris? Doing so not only tells the NFL that he is not doing a good job, but that he has lost the trust and confidence of the players. Is that the move to make here?
I really do not know which coaching moves this team can make this year in mid-season to salvage their playoff hopes. But the fans have lost their patience. Would bringing in one more set of eyes help? Could the team bring in former defensive coordinator Wade Phillips to serve as a defensive consultant? After all, he is available, knows many of these players, and could help turn the corner for the team.
Right now the fans are pissed off. Curiously, there is no more Jared Goff to point at to blame. And yet, it’s the same set of troubles and the same challenges. Perhaps the fans have a right to be upset after all.
