There. Do you hear it? Listen closely.
There it is again.
It is the silence from LA Rams’ most recently acquired veteran wide receiver, Odell Beckham Jr. After putting up ever-increasing numbers, and three consecutive games with a touchdown, he fell silent in the offense as he caught just one of three passes for seven yards and no touchdowns. And yet, he is not headlining the NFL news demanding to be traded, or thrown to more.
So too has the silence from his teammate, Van Jefferson, been equally peaceful and promising. After three consecutive games with a touchdown, and what appeared to be an ever-increasing role in this offense, the second-year receiver caught two of two passes for 23 yards, and rushed once for an impressive 10-yard burst.
And he didn’t awaken the next day making headlines by screaming for more work or more targets either.
Rams roster full of receiver talent
In the hard-fought Week 15 win, LA Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford learned to throw the football where the defenders ain’t. That’s good news because the early “what is he doing?” interception flashed the potential for another loss in this one. But he quickly recovered, and his 21 of 29 passing for 244 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception, was cooly effective.
Once more, the spotlight fell upon potential NFL MVP Cooper Kupp, whose nine of 13 receptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns has him on track to threaten or break some All-Time franchise or NFL records. So far this season, Kupp is shocking everyone in the NFL by catching 122 of 164 passes for 1,625 yards and 14 touchdowns.
But Stafford also connected with rookie wide receiver Ben Skowronek, whose four catches of five targets for 42 yards were enough to keep the Seahawks’ secondary honest.
Adapt or perish is a good lesson to learn in the NFL, and the LA Rams offense seems to be taking that lesson to heart. Without their starting right tackle, his replacement, or starting tight end, the LA Rams mustered enough offense to win the game. The Rams have now won two consecutive games despite being very short-handed at game time. As players return, the Rams will be getting stronger with refreshed players joining the ranks once more.
The LA Rams did not get a great game out of Odell Beckham Jr. nor from Van Jefferson. But they did get solid production out of rookie Ben Skowronek and veteran Cooper Kupp.
This year, everyone is contributing, and nobody is complaining. That’s the secret sauce for this team.
