More than meets the eye

Anyone who judges the value of veteran outside linebacker Von Miller solely on his quarterback sacks really doesn’t understand the value of having him on the LA Rams roster does for the team. Miller is a veteran who will be vital to the defense in 2022. How so?

Even if the Rams let Ogbonnia Okoronkwo sign elsewhere, there is no short supply of young players who want to take it to the next level at outside linebacker. The Rams have Justin Hollins, Chris Garrett, and Terrell Lewis, plus a robust draft class of 2022 at the position. Who will mentor them?

While veteran Leonard Floyd is a great example of how to play the position well, who is really better than Von Miller?

No better mentor than Von Miller

The guy is so fundamentally sound, he uses flawless techniques to get upfield, set the edge, and contain mobile quarterbacks. Then, he collapses the pocket. Simple, right? Well, if you watch the games, too few edge rushers do it properly. And nobody does it as well as Von Miller.

It’s always a challenging task to show up mid-season for a new team, suit up, and just go at it. The Rams understand that. So when the team traded valuable picks to the Denver Broncos for Miller, it was not a part-year rental. The organization truly intends to pursue Miller in free agency, and they have the means to bring him back on a multi-year deal.

Von Miller has not been to the NFL Playoffs since he helped the Denver Broncos win Super Bowl 50. The LA Rams knew that he was so very hungry and that he will become more and more of a factor as the Rams advance deeper into post-season. He will be the perfect addition to the likes of Leonard Floyd, Aaron Donald, and even Greg Gaines. His best is yet to come.
