V – Make the right decisions on Special Teams

The LA Rams need to be very careful on special teams’ play. It wasn’t so long ago that the Rams put up rather embarrassing efforts on onside kicks, efforts that had the horrendous effect of giving possession of the football to the kicking team. And so, that now haunts the Rams, a skeleton in the closet that rattles each and every time the opposing team kicks off.

And yet, the Rams’ knack for trick plays on special teams has gone from game saver to blowing up in the team’s face this year. The Rams have been fooled on punts this year as well.

I hate to remind myself of that.

Skeletons in the closet

And so you know that those plays have been added to any future opponents’ list of ‘trick plays’ to use against the Rams. What can the Rams do? Well, at the very least, keep their heads down and simply play fundamentally sound football.  Brandon Powell does exactly that. No finesse. Not cute moves. Simply a football player who runs to daylight. He makes it look so easy.

How profound, right? And yet, with all of the data analytics, the situational players and packages that can confound a team, coaches, and players in a big game, sometimes it’s just blocking the guy you are supposed to block, tackling the ball carrier when he is in your grasp, catching the football if it touches your hands. In the end, it’s not the team that makes the most spectacular plays that win the game. It’s the team that makes the most plays.
