III – Involving all skill players

The Rams have a lot of talent, perhaps too much in some areas. Have you ever witnessed a child try to pick out which flavor of ice cream they prefer at Baskin Robbins? Yes, there is such a thing as too many choices. The Rams have a lot of players who can make plays. But which of those players can make plays?

Yes the LA Rams have Cooper Kupp, Odell Beckham Jr., and Sony Michel. But the 2020 NFL version of the LA Rams was particularly adept at involving the less-famous weapons. In the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs last year, RB Cam Akers and WR Van Jefferson stepped up in a big way for the team. How? Simply stated, the Rams entrusted them with a workload that allowed them to showcase that they were big enough to handle big moments.

Who will get the opportunity to contribute?

That’s the hard part. These LA Rams, as proficient as they are on offense, seem to sink into patterns that are deciphered by opposing defensive coordinators and thwarted. IF that happened in the regular season, you can bet that it will happen in the playoffs, each and every week.  Unfortunately, the LA Rams do not seem to be actively self-scouting themselves, trying to detect those patterns, and pivoting to use those tendencies against future opponents.

But even if the team does not self-scout, the Rams can accomplish nearly the same thing by rerouting certain ‘looks’ in a different way. Pass out of a two-tight-end formation. Set up the backfield with two running backs just to throw off the defense. The more ‘what the hell is that?’ formations that the Rams can throw at defenses, the more future defenses must plan to defend.
