Future of Sony Michel in question?

So far, it appears that the LA Rams have been quick to restart RB Cam Akers as the featured running back in this offense, perhaps two quickly? After all, the guy was out for the entire season and just returned for the playoffs, handling the football for 41 carries for 103 yards. For comparison purposes, the Rams handed the football to Sony Michel 14 times in the playoffs so far and got 62 yards out of him.

And that is not even examining two costly fumbles in the same game by Akers.

It’s quite clear from these decisions that the LA Rams view Sony Michel as a stop-gap type of player. If they make an offer to extend him at the end of this season, I will be greatly surprised. After all, the idea behind getting him was to keep the seat warm until Cam Akers could return. Well, Akers returned, and Michel suddenly found himself pushed out of first-class and even business class and is now flying back in the economy section at the tail end of this plane.

Sweet December

Quite the demotion after the guy was the most proficient running back in the NFL for December 2021, eh?

Well, we’ve been here before. We know that TE Tyler Higbee’s performance in December 2019 was an eye-popping performance by an NFL tight end. 522 yards in one month was incredible. But immediately thereafter, Higbee fell back into a familiar okay-to-good pattern.

Michel is a football player’s running back. He is physical, will make the tough runs, will get the yardage, and will get right back up and do it all over again. But in the grand scheme of NFL roster-building, he was a veteran necessity for the Rams 2021 NFL season.  He had post-season experience, was versatile, was familiar with a rotational role, and gives his all.

I cannot see the LA Rams bringing him back unless something significantly major happens. That’s when we’ve named him as one of eight players who won’t be back next year.    (see slide 7)

Is there one more flash in his light bulb in the postseason? Can he pound the rock for a win one more time? We think so. Now that you’ve read our thoughts, what do you think?
