Matthew Stafford and LA Rams take 1st step to hammer out extension
By Bret Stuter
Motivations, money, and Matthew Stafford
So where are we coming up with the idea that the LA Rams front office and Matthew Stafford’s agent are sitting down to hammer out a new contract? Well, that report comes to us from none other than NFL reporter Ian Rapoport, who shared that information as part of the post-game wrap-up on Sunday, February 13.
Now, there are several gems embedded in this short post-game broadcast, and we will dissect the entire bundle, separate the issues, and feature each one in their own article. But for this one, let’s focus upon the LA Rams and Matthew Stafford. Right now, it’s pretty clear that the Rams organization and Matthew Stafford work well together, are motivated to get a deal done, and now it all comes down to finding the money that works for both Matthew Stafford and the LA Rams organization.
Matthew Stafford was better than the brochure for 2021
Here’s what the NFL broadcast had to report on the matter:
When the LA Rams made moves for each of their 2021 roster additions, there was no doubt some behind-the-scenes work from the team to make some preliminary connections to gauge the receptiveness of the player and the agent to working with the team to make this a long-term relationship.
Of course, the Rams spent a lot of capital to acquire Stafford, and by all rights, it was Stafford under center who made the entire offense go in 2021. There was no comprehensive running game. As a matter of fact, the Rams swapped out 60 percent of the receivers who started for them the opening game through the course of the season. Few other NFL quarterbacks, if any, could lead the Rams to a Super Bowl victory under similar circumstances.
