Von Miller extension with the LA Rams is still possible
Negotiating strategy?
Of course, veteran outside linebacker Von Miller can explore his options. After all, his entire career before being traded was with the Denver Broncos. Now that he will hit free agency, this could simply be his way of exploring a part of the NFL that he had no experience with. Perhaps it is simply a negotiation strategy, an attempt to compel the Rams front office to up their offer? All things considered, the LA Rams still make the most sense if both sides can work out the financial side of things.
The LA Rams salary cap situation is currently the biggest obstacle the LA Rams from extending Von Miller. Currently, Spotrac lists the LA Rams at roughly $10 million over the 2022 salary cap for next season before signing any free agents. They also project Von Miller’s market value to be $10.6 million, but teams may overpay.
Clearing over $21 million off the current LA Rams roster is not easy, but LA Rams GM Les Snead can do it. The first opportunity to do so is Andrew Whitworth’s retirement, which seems quite likely and would get the team under the salary cap.
Show me the money
If Andrew Whitworth retires, the extension of Matthew Stafford and restructuring contracts of current players become the last obstacles to the Rams having the money to secure multiple free agents.
Extending Matthew Stafford and then restructuring multiple veteran contracts can open up the current cap space to bring in a few free agents to make a second Super Bowl run.
Some may complain about the LA Rams jeopardizing their financial future to keep the team together, but the same was said when they traded the draft picks away. The Super Bowl window is now, not the future.
The LA Rams want to keep Von Miller, Von Miller’s best chance at another Super Bowl is within the LA Rams organization, and the salary cap is a temporary obstacle that the front office can overcome. Von Miller’s staying may not be likely, but it is certainly quite possible.
