LA Rams running back Darrell Henderson Jr. has been a significant role player for the offense throughout his rookie contract. Until now, he has filled a necessary niche for the offense. Sometimes things change. The landscape that is taking shape for the 2022 NFL season may be his last in Los Angeles if he makes it to the season.
Henderson Jr.’s contract will expire at the end of the upcoming season, and signing him to a long-term contract is not a viable financial option for the LA Rams. The LA Rams will likely be prioritizing extensions for quarterback Matthew Stafford, Odell Beckham Jr., Von Miller, and if sufficient funds remain, for wide receiver Cooper Kupp.
An extension for Henderson Jr. directly impacts the ability to re-sign Cam Akers, whose contract expires the year after. Before Akers’ torn Achilles before the start of the 2021 season, many felt he was their featured running back. Now, after a dismal rushing performance throughout the NFL Playoffs, the rushing attack is laced with question marks into the future.
If the LA Rams agree that Cam Akers is the top running back, extending Akers and letting Henderson’s contract expire makes more sense. Both running backs could fit in the Rams’ offense, but that requires extremely team-friendly contracts.
Henderson Jr. and Akers taking veteran-minimum contracts to stay with the LA Rams is an unrealistic expectation. Henderson Jr. could take a minimum contract to stay, but another issue emerges.
