Other potential migrating QBs

We know that there is a rising level of interest in former Chicago Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky. What is driving that interest? Well, he is a young but successful veteran of five NFL seasons with a rather accurate arm and a solid touchdown to interception ratio. But perhaps most of all, he is now viewed in a new light.

That is, if Matthew Stafford can win a Super Bowl on the right NFL team, why not Trubisky? After all, he is a free agent this year who has and can take over the starting role for practically any NFL team. And he would be an ideal segue to a team intending on drafting a young quarterback to develop for a starting role for the 2023 NFL season.

Don’t let Foles fool you

What about former Super Bowl-winning QB Nick Foles? Well, he is a different beast altogether. He is a veteran quarterback, and he can win as an NFL starter. But he needs a specific type of offense, as he is a pocket quarterback who needs plenty of weapons, a strong running game, and time to throw.

While he may not excite every fan base, he certainly has created ire in the fans of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New England Patriots. You see, Foles has a lifetime record of 2-0 against the Chicago Bears. That is something and may just be enough to prompt some NFL team to inquire about trading for the veteran

After all, not every quarterback can outduel Tom Brady, right?

Wentz on the move

After trading for Carson Wentz for the 2021 season, it appears that the Indianapolis Colts are likely to trade or cut QB Carson Wentz before a significant roster bonus kicks in later this month. What prompted the Colts to be down on the quarterback? Well, after achieving a 9-6 record and what appeared to be a near-lock on a playoff berth, the Colts dropped their final two games of the season.

Wentz’s performance was cited over that two-game losing streak as the primary cause for the plummet.  Over two critical games, he completed just 33 of 56 passes for 333 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.  That vanishing act from the Colts’ offensive output did not sit right with the coaches nor the team’s brass. So we now find the Colts’ prepared to trade to cut Wentz from the team.

But all in all, Wentz threw for over 3500 yards, 27 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions. He even led the Colts to a 9-8 season. That’s not a bad place to start for a team looking for a veteran to hold down the fort while a younger quarterback learns the ropes.

Don’t get me wrong. Nobody is asserting that any quarterback mentioned in this article not named Matthew Stafford can lead an NFL team to a Super Bowl victory just by starting for a new team. But the NFL is a copycat league, and in the limited options for teams at the quarterback position this off-season, you should look for some team or teams to give it a try.
