The LA Rams draft must draft CB talent

One position the LA Rams need to focus upon during the NFL Scouting Combine is cornerback, as the team currently has two of its top three cornerbacks entering free agency. As it currently stands the LA Rams have a limited number of cornerbacks returning for the 2022 NFL season and beyond.

The LA Rams’ number two cornerback in 2021, Darious Williams, is among the top free agents in the 2022 free agency period, so he may be difficult to keep if he desires top dollar. Not impossible, just tricky. Based upon what appeared to be some regression in the 2021 season, there are few expectations to pursue Williams.

The LA Rams have one of the elite cornerbacks in the league in Jalen Ramsey, who is under contract until 2027. Still, the other cornerback position is a significant question mark, and the rest of the depth chart is a mystery.

The skillset needed to succeed as a cornerback in the LA Rams’ defense is a bit complex, as Raheem Morris ran mostly zone coverage in 2021, but that is a shift from his usual style. A player who excels in zone coverage but can hang in man coverage should be the current target.

The cornerback position may not be viewed by the LA Rams brain-trust as the top need in the 2022 NFL Draft. After all, the LA Rams already have players who can at least play the position, and the LA Rams will believe a greater need exists on the offensive line and at the linebacker position. If the Rams continue to use zone coverages, they could add less talented defensive backs, who could play very well in the defense.

With the cornerbacks, the objective is to find players that can play in zone coverage and are likely to be available later in the 2022 NFL Draft. The LA Rams scouting department has likely been focusing on cornerbacks available on day three.

Any of the young men we are about to identify in this article have the potential to become a starting cornerback for the 2022 NFL season. But at the very least, they will be able to compete for a spot on the active roster. This year’s NFL Scouting Combine provides a fantastic opportunity to get a first look at them, whether or not they wear the royal blue and gold in 2022.
