Inside linebacker

The LA Rams enter the 2022 NFL Draft with just eight picks. While that is not necessarily too few picks, the Rams would certainly appreciate more picks in this draft. No, the team is not exactly hurting for starters in 2022, but the team would benefit from onboarding a robust crop of rookies who can earn depth roles for the team and develop into starters for the future. But to get more picks, the team must be willing to give up something of value.

One such player who could be traded for a 2022 NFL Draft pick is veteran inside linebacker Troy Reeder. Even as he had ten starts and competed in 17 games, he was not at the same level of play as some of his colleagues. Still, he came up with 91 tackles, two quarterback sacks, and two interceptions this past season. In the playoffs, he started three games and accounted for 16 tackles.

Broncos like Rams ILBs

The Denver Broncos are prepared to allow three inside linebackers to test the 2022 NFL Free Agency market. To backfill their vacancies, Predominantly Oranges Travis Wakeman believes that the Broncos should trade a fifth-round draft pick to the LA Rams for Troy Reeder.  I’m all for that. The Rams could sign Reeder to a modest one-year deal, trade Reeder to the Broncos, and then add a fifth-round draft pick to their ammunition.

The LA Rams are ready to move on to Ernest Jones paired up with either Travin Howard or Christian Rozeboom in 2022. The Rams were victimized too often in 2021 by linebackers. Reeder was particularly susceptible to misreading his keys, miscommunicating, and defending the wrong receiver. As the Rams defense takes on more of the image of what DC Raheem Morris wants, the Rams will want to continue to infuse more physical play at the inside linebacker position.

Reeder could be a solid player in the right defense. I simply do not see that defensive fit with the LA Rams. Trading him for a fifth-round pick may not just benefit the Rams, but also help his career as well.
