Will LA Rams re-sign Von Miller? Flip a coin, as it’s likely 50/50
By Bret Stuter
There is a strong belief among LA Rams fans that the team will succeed in re-signing veteran outside linebacker Von Miller. And from the early indications, that is certainly one of several possible outcomes. If you look back on Miller, the LA Rams were able to trade for the guy because the Denver Broncos no longer believed that he had enough gas in his tank to start on their defense.
In fact, if you examine the details of the trade between the Rams and the Broncos, you will find that the Broncos paid $9 million of Von Miller’s 2021 salary to play for the LA Rams. That is not exactly a standard for the NFL, and pretty much displays the amount of belief that the Broncos had in Miller. But the operative word there is “had”.
Rams Free Agency plans complicated
Perhaps they were justified. In 2020 and the first half of the 2021 NFL season, Von Miller’s production had taken a serious drop. Of course, his drop in production happened after a devastating foot injury early in 2020, and he required surgery. That was a pretty significant blow to the 10-year veteran’s career.
When he returned in 2021, the Denver Broncos were already prepared for him to slip a little, having added OLB Jonathon Cooper to the position. And the progress among the younger players did demand a bit more playing time.
So when the LA Rams showed up and dangled a 2022 second-round and third-round pick, the Broncos pulled the trigger. They had Bradley Chubb, Malik Reed, and rookie Jonathon Cooper who were all fighting for playing time. So the Broncos did the unthinkable and traded away an injured Von Miller for two valuable draft picks.
