If you have hopes for the LA Rams to extend Odell Beckham Jr., you are in luck. The team is currently working with the player and his agent to bring him back, hopefully on a long-term deal, to play for the Rams in 2022 and the foreseeable future. While that is good news, it does not come without a fair share of wrinkles.

First and foremost, we know that Odell Beckham Jr. suffered a non-contact ACL injury in the second quarter of Super Bowl LVI. That injury required surgery, and the post-surgical recovery if all goes well falls between six to nine months. That means that for all intents and purposes, the Rams offense will face the first half of the season without OBJ, just like the 2021 season.

In terms of believability, this rumor makes complete sense. Both OBJ and the LA Rams were nearing an agreement before the injury. Due to the ACL injury, other teams’ interest in pursuing Beckham has likely cooled considerably. But perhaps most importantly, LA Rams head coach Sean McVay has lobbied hard for the Rams to bring OBJ back.

Silver lining playbook

If you want a silver lining to this narrative, the outcome could be that the Rams offense will emphasize working with the younger receivers in training camp. When veteran Robert Woods returns from IR (who himself suffered an ACL injury in 2021) and Odell Beckham Jr. returns in November 2022, the Rams receivers will be far more prepared and well-coached to make a significant playoff run.

Of course, the team will need to get there. But reinforcements are already in the pipeline, as the team will look to Tutu Atwell, Jacob Harris, and Ben Skowronek to step up in their second year with the team. And the Rams will likely add to the group in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Getting OBJ back for the 2022 NFL season is one of a multitude of steps that the LA Rams must take to successfully defend their championship. But it’s a great first step. Let’s hope that the reported rumor is true because the Rams offense is far more dangerous with OBJ on the football field.
