Guess who is singing the praises of LA Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford? NFL Talking Head Colin Cowherd. That’s right. Every now and then, hitting the hornet’s next in terms of controversial NFL topics circles around to the Rams organization. Right now, the recent success of veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford has forced some to re-think their original impression of his talent, demeanor, and NFL legacy.
And of course, Colin Cowherd is there to fan the flames.

It’s the age-old NFL question, does the team make the player, or doe the player make the team? By rights, does a quarterback who earns All-Pro status mean that he can play and flourish in any offense, for any coaching staff, throwing to any receivers? Or is there a fine distribution of a myriad of factors that bring it all to be? Much like the taught gossamer strands of a spider’s web, the tension and pull of all the various anchor points truly unfold a player’s potential.
And for that matter, the team’s success.
Stafford’s success means Stafford > Rodgers?
Before he arrived at the LA Rams, veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford was 0-3 in the NFL playoffs and was believed by many to be incapable of winning a big game. Well, that theory got all shot to hell, because he ran the table this past season, beating quarterbacks Kyler Murray, Tom Brady, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Joe Burrow in the process.
All Cowherd does here is to leverage the flaws inherent in the mainstream of NFL thinking. Measuring an NFL career of any individual player inherently includes the sum of four C’s: Coaching, culture, Colleagues, and Competition.
Both Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford have played extremely well in the NFL. Both veteran quarterbacks give their respective teams a chance to win it all in any given year. But Rodgers has benefited from being surrounded by some of the best in the NFL for many years. Matthew Stafford has only now had a winning team surrounding him.
So for that matter, the true head-to-head competition began in 2021. The score?
Matthew Stafford 1
Aaron Rodgers 0
But only if you are into that sort of thing. Apparently, Colin Cowherd is.
