With the 104th pick

…of the 2022 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams have selected Abraham Lucas, offensive tackle, from Washington State University.

Do the LA Rams use their 104th pick on an offensive lineman? Impossible, you say. And you’re likely correct. But the upside of this 6-foot-6 322-pound offensive lineman certainly makes it within the scope of possibilities. And his current draft grade projects him into that Round 3 or Round 4  spot where the LA Rams will be looking to significantly bolster the roster.

He is capable of doing exactly that.

While he has noted some opportunities to improve at blocking downfield in run blocking, nobody questions his NFL potential at pass blocking. He is a capable and lengthy phalanx-like offensive lineman who is very good at keeping defenders off balance and riding them around the horn and away from the quarterback.

The Rams may have their starting offensive line in place for 2022, but that does not replenish the ranks. And with the team staring down the barrel of two more starting offensive linemen whose contracts expire at the end of the 2022 NFL season, namely OT Rob Havenstein and OG David Edwards, it’s a smart move to get players on board now who can step up if need be.

The consensus is that Lucas is very good, if not great, at everything an NFL team should be looking for in their next starting offensive tackle. Since the team has a vested interest in protecting veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford, I believe that Lucas should be on their board for their debut selection in the 2022 NFL Draft.
