player. 51. . WR. (2017-2021). Robert Woods. 10

When the LA Rams hired Sean McVay to be their new head coach in 2017, they also signed up WR Robert Woods, a receiver who had just finished his rookie contract with the Buffalo Bills. Bobby Trees, as he was affectionately referred to by Rams fans, brought more than expertise on the football field.

He was the perfect player for the perfect scenario. He was the textbook version of what the LA Rams offense wanted in their wide receiver. And so he was more than one player on the roster, or even on the football. He was the team’s template, the gold standard against which all other wide receivers would be judged.

Had he had more time, he would have risen in the rankings. And there is so much to love ’bout Bobby Trees that it will be difficult to contain myself for this one.

Let’s start off by saying this. Veteran WR Robert Woods was the blueprint for all LA Rams wide receivers under HC Sean McVay, much like actor Christopher Lee was the blueprint for the fictitious James Bond character.

Although Woods played his first four seasons with the Buffalo Bills, he will be far more remembered for his last five years in an LA Rams uniform. Woods has never been formally recognized as a top NFL receiver, never nominated for the NFL Pro Bowl. But he is an offensive coordinator’s dream player.  The 6-foot-0 195-pound wide receiver caught 367 of 552 passes for 4,626 yards and 23 touchdowns. Not too shabby.

He can catch for more than 1200 yards and six touchdowns while rushing for 157 yards and one touchdown on just 19 carries. He is an outstanding blocker and willingly will block anyone he is tasked with. He can even return kickoffs or punts in a pinch.

Woods was the welcoming committee to rookies Cooper Kupp, Josh Reynolds, Van Jefferson, Ben Skowronek, Tutu Atwell, J.J. Koski, and more. His willingness to embrace the complete role of an NFL wide receiver, including blocking, laid the foundation for the Rams’ offense to flourish. And for many Rams fans, he will forever be an LA Rams player.
