With the 175th selection of the 2022 NFL Draft
In the fifth round, the LA Rams select
If you are able to land a cornerback from the University of Missouri, you know that you have a defensive back who has competed against some of the best collegiate talents in the nation. While Akayleb Evans was a transfer student out of Tulsa, he made the most out of his sole year in the SEC.
Some mock drafts have Evans falling in this draft, and that’s perfectly fine for the LA Rams who need cornerbacks like the desert needs a good soaking rain. If you didn’t think that a fifth-round player is anyone to get excited about, you may wish to rethink that standard after getting a peek into Evans. You see, Evans is an athletic phenomenon, the type of athleticism that seemed to be the sole focus of the LA Rams’ 2021 NFL Draft.
But unlike others, Evans is not just athletic, but physical too. He is a big strong cornerback who fits the defensive schemes favored by Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. And his Senior Bowl performance proved to the nation that he is among the most physical, and gifted, defensive backs in this draft class.
All-Pro DB Jalen Ramsey will need help in coverage. While he is big and raw, Evans has been honing his craft and focusing to better himself. And with his pairing with another athletic treasure in DB Robert Rochell, the Rams secondary could quickly go from their biggest defensive question mark to their greatest strength.
