VI: More than special teams wunderkind

The LA Rams were more than happy to grab the very raw and equally very athletic receiver, Jacob Harris. But once the team had him, they were not sure what to do with him. Is he a tight end? Or is he a wide receiver? Does it even matter?

Perhaps not to the fans who want to cheer for him on the football field, but certainly to the position coaches, the offensive coordinator, and the head coach of the LA Rams? It most certainly does. Right now, I’m still of the opinion that he is on the tight end track for the offense. Why? Well, the LA Rams tight end situation remains a bit ‘in flux’ right now, with the loss of free agent Johnny Mundt, and injuries that interrupted the play of Tyler Higbee.

While we have emphasized how raw Jacob Harris was when the LA Rams drafted him in 2021, I don’t think that a year in the LA Rams system was in vain. To be honest, I believe that the 6-foot-5 211-pound second-year receiver used the time quite effectively, even during his rehabilitation period.

There were no expectations for Harris when he arrived at OTAs and training camp one year ago. And as long as the practices were helmets and shorts, he looked every bit the part of an NFL football player. But once the pads went on, he was out of his track star-like element, and his spot on the depth chart became uncertain.

That won’t happen this year. If anything, I believe that a far more familiar and determined Jacob Harris raises some eyebrows on the coaching staff this year.  Into how much playing time with that transition? I’d say that the Rams will make use of his height and physicality in red zone offensive packages. This year, I believe he will serve up some scores.
