Many who follow the path of a rookie prospect believe that if you are not drafted, you are not making the team. There are many ways we say it, sometimes never fully realizing that to be the meaning. Naming undrafted free agents ‘camp bodies’, ‘remote chance to make the team’, or simply saying nothing more about them than their name are all patterns we use on social media or in our conversations that suggest they haven’t a chance.

But when an undrafted free agent rookie signs with the LA Rams, they always have the opportunity to make the roster.  The Rams signed 22 undrafted rookie free agent rookies after the 2020 NFL Draft. Six players from that class remain with the team from 2020. The team signed 10 undrafted rookie free agent rookies after the 2021 NFL Draft. Two remain with the team from 2021. That is a hit rate of 25 percent.

If those were lottery ticket odds, you can bet that there would be a lot of scratching going on right now.

And so, the success rate for young NFL hopefuls to make a team, despite not hearing their name called during the NFL Draft is pretty good, as long as the player signs with the right team.

  • Rams Need    Draft depth
  1. IOL                         OLB
  2. ILB                         WR
  3. DB (CB)                 CB
  4. OLB                        OT
  5. OT                           IOL
  6. DT, S, RB, QB       RB, TE, ILB, QB

With the LA Rams looking at a 90-man roster limit for training camp, with the participation in the NFL’s IPP giving their roster a +1, the team will be looking for up to 15 players after the draft. That is, the LA Rams currently have 68 players under contract (well, 67+1), and have 8 draft picks. The math works out to 15 additional signings before training camp.

That works out to a lot of signings, and if the historic 25 percent hit rate continues, means that the LA Rams roster (active and practice squad) will include four players from that group. So it makes sense to spend some time discussing where and eventually who the LA Rams will focus upon after the draft ends. But first, let’s look at the positions that the LA Rams have targeted in the past.
