The LA Rams 2022 NFL roster is starting to take shape. Perhaps a small step for the team and a giant step towards defending their NFL Championship Title occurred on Thursday, April 14, 2022, when placekicker Matt Gay signed his one-year tender offer to play for the Rams in 2022.

If you think that is something that was unheralded by the Rams organization, you may be surprised to see the team’s official Twitter account reaction.

The return of Matt Gay was absolutely expected but is also cause for celebration. After all, his performance since joining the LA Rams has been sensational. And because he is such a young player, there is every reason to believe that he will improve with each new NFL season. Improve on what? Well, his 23 consecutive field goals in 2021 were a tad impressive.

But let’s look beyond the individual accolades and statistics. The LA Rams won two regular-season games in which the margin of victory was a game-winning field goal. But Gay was just getting started.

In the post-season, he was the reason for three of four wins. That included the Divisional Round, the NFC Championship Game, and Super Bowl LVI. Now, he’s back for another go at it.

Matt Gay is entering just his fourth NFL season, which means that he should have plenty of football life in his leg. That’s a good thing because I’m quite happy not to be shopping for a placekicker again. After losing kicker Greg Zuerlein to the Dallas Cowboys, the LA Rams went about searching for a new kicker.

Rams Free Agency chalks up another victory

Their original ‘tryouts’ included drafted rookie Sam Sloman, former CFL kicker Lirim Hajrullahu, and former XFL kicker Austin MacGinnis. That competition led to Sloman being awarded the job. When he struggled, the Rams signed veteran Kai Forbath. He fell to injury, compelling the Rams to sign second-year kicker Matt Gay. It was obvious that Matt Gay was the future starter, as he was a perfect 16 of 16 on extra points, and was the most accurate kicker at 87.5 percent completion.

We talk about the differences that players like Sony Michel, Odell Beckham Jr., and even Von Miller made for the LA Rams in their quest to win a Super Bowl Championship.

But don’t overlook the re-signing of Pro Bowl kicker Matt Gay. He was the difference in three NFL Playoff games, including Super Bowl LVI.

And now, the LA Rams’ free agency efforts can chit a victory in the win column. Pro Bowl kicker Matt Gay is signed, sealed, and delivered for another Super Bowl run with the LA Rams.
