Even as the LA Rams have been a bit dominating over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of late, winning the past three consecutive games, including a 27-24 victory in the Division. That’s right, the LA Rams are 3-0 against Tom Brady when he is not playing for head coach Bill Belichick.

But over time, the Rams have not fared nearly as well against “Hoodie”, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. How do we know?  Well, in honor of Belichick’s 70th birthday, ESPN has featured an article that reveals how well each team in the NFL has fared against him throughout his NFL career.

That’s right. New England Patriots Head Coach turned 70 on Saturday, April 16, 2022.

The LA Rams (also St Louis Rams) have a lifetime 2-6 record against him. Of course, two of those losses have been in Super Bowls. The first Super Bowl loss was a dramatic 20-17 loss to the New England Patriots under the tenure of head coach Mike Martz during Super Bowl XXXVI. That was both Belichick and Brady’s first SB victory.

Second Super Bowl defeat

The second time the Rams fell was a 13-3 loss to the Patriots at Super Bowl LIII. That was the Patriots’ last SB win for both Belichick and Brady combined and fell during the watch of current LA Rams head coach Sean McVay.

The LA Rams would avenge that loss, albeit two years later in a regular-season game. In that one, the LA Rams absolutely dominated the Patriots as the Rams coasted to a 24-3 victory.

So two victories? Six losses? When did they occur?

Date                       Record     Score
Nov 18, 2001,        1-0         St. Louis Rams 24  New England Patriots 17
Feb 3, 2002,           1-1         Super Bowl XXXVI: New England Patriots 20  St. Louis Rams 17
Nov 7, 2004,           1-2         New England Patriots 40  St. Louis Rams  22
Oct 26, 2008,          1-3         New England Patriots 23  St. Louis Rams  16
Oct 28, 2012,          1-4         New England Patriots 45  St. Louis Rams  7
Dec 4, 2016,            1-5         New England Patriots 26  LA Rams  10
Feb 3, 2019,            1-6         Super Bowl LIII: New England Patriots 13  LA Rams 3
Dec 10, 2020,          2-6        LA Rams 24  New England Patriots 3

Curiously, the LA Rams have won the first and the last, and latest matchups against Belichick and the Patriots.

The Rams have since exorcised their demons against Belichick, against Tom Brady, and in winning their first Super Bowl for the city of Los Angeles. But I don’t think anyone can deny that the Super Bowl win would have been that much sweeter if the Rams had beaten the Patriots in the NFL Championship Game.

As we see in the Table above. If the LA Rams continue to win and compete in Super Bowls, perhaps in time they’ll get that chance as well.
