Left on the board 1: DT Perrion Winfrey, Oklahoma

The Rams have one of the best interior defenders in the game in Aaron Donald, who moves up and down the defensive line like it’s a block party going after the quarterback. Behind him, though, isn’t a lot of depth. The Rams have surrounded him with surprisingly effective teammates in NT Greg Gaines and veteran DL A’Shawn Robinson.  But the Rams may need reinforcements.

In terms of a gap scheme player, which the Los Angeles Rams like to run, Oklahoma Sooner’s defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey is a monster. He’s got a great first step, shows good hand technique to win his positioning, and has the explosion and quickness to finish the rep and penetrate into the backfield.

The LA Rams have a lot of veterans on expiring contracts on the defensive line in 2023 as well. A’Shawn Robinson, Greg Gaines, Michael Hoecht, and even Marquise Copeland are in their final year. So drafting a defensive lineman who is ready to earn a spot on the rotation is a good choice here as well.

I noted in my draft notes the versatility that he flashed on film, as well as the lack of interest coming out of high school:

"Perrion Winfrey played both 1T and 3T for the Sooners. Winfrey held four offers coming out of Lake Park High in 2017 – Morgan State, Wyoming, Virginia Tech, and Western Illinois. Ultimately, he chose to go the JUCO route which helped him secure the unanimous #1 JUCO prospect rating in the class of 2020."

Winfrey will be a very good pro and should be among the first players to come off of the board tomorrow morning. While his consistency wasn’t always great, Winfrey had a great week at the Senior Bowl back in February and showed all of the traits that you want to see from a defensive tackle in the NFL. The fact that he still remains on the board is shocking to me.
