The LA Rams entered the 2022 NFL Draft with more than a few question marks about their roster. While the corps of the team remained intact, there was enough off-season attrition focused upon several key positions to warrant some concern, if not downright worry. Those positions were the offensive line, the pass rush, and the secondary.
On the offensive line, the Rams had said farewell to starting right guard Austin Corbett, and to the retiring sage, veteran left tackle Andrew Whitworth. For the pass rush, the Rams had said farewell to veteran OLB Von Miller, role rusher Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, and watched helplessly as the Tennessee Titans signed away backup outside linebacker Justin Lawler.
But the greatest concern was the secondary. Not only had the team lost DB Darious Williams, Donte Deayon, and Kareem Orr this year, but the team had lost starters Troy Hill and John Johnson III to free agency the year before. To compensate, the LA Rams made greater use of All-Pro defensive back Jalen Ramsey across a wide range of roles.
But over the course of a 17-game season and four postseason games, the wear and tear on Ramsey were nearly at the breaking point. It was so noticeable that the infusion of veteran safety Eric Weddle and seldom played Nick Scott on the back end of the defense was a measurable impact. Something about veteran DB Weddle worked masterfully in the LA Rams version of defense under Raheem Morris, but not so much in previous versions.
Could the same effect be true for other defensive backs? Let’s keep that in mind as we cite reasons to love the acquisition of veteran CB Troy Hill, shall we?
