Edge rushers Part II
Edge Benton Whitley out of Holy Cross is a small college football player who has the potential for a huge impact in the NFL. As soon as the draft ended, his phone was bombarded with calls with offers from nine different NFL teams. In the end, he weighed out his options and narrowed the decision to the Atlanta Falcons, the Arizona Cardinals, and the LA Rams. He chose the defending Super Bowl Champion Rams.
Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing in at 251 pounds, he has a solid opportunity to fill a rotational role in the LA Rams defense. While he has good positional instincts for setting the edge, keeping his eyes on the backfield, and is capable of shedding blockers to either side, he is still a bit raw in terms of overall power and pass-rush options. Training camp will address both areas, so keep Whitley on your radar.
OLB Andrzej Hughes-Murray out of Oregon State may appear to be a long shot, but the truth is that he is already from the West Coast, and is a player who has competed against some of the top NCAA talents over his career. Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 246-pounds, the former Beaver is a solid size.
In five college seasons, Hughes-Murray played 44 games, recorded 157 tackles, 22.0 tackles for a loss, and 11 quarterback sacks. He even deflected four passes, forced one fumble, and recovered two fumbles as well.
He is a player who demonstrates leadership on and off the field, is very coachable, and will do whatever is asked of him, even to the point of returning two kickoffs in his senior season.
