Champ, Samaria, and Van Jefferson set for a new LA Rams season
By Bret Stuter
Winning the Super Bowl was not the greatest event in LA Rams WR Van Jefferson’s life. To be honest, it was not even the greatest event to happen in his life in 2022. You see, moments after Super Bowl LVI concluded and the LA Rams were named the winner, Jefferson was informed that his wife, Samaria, was giving birth to their son.
On Super Bowl Sunday of all days. The man wins the world, and then the heavens blessed him with a newborn son named Champ. Now that is a birthday that I’m willing to be the Jefferson home never forgets.
But since we are a football blog for the LA Rams, we will eventually need to turn this discussion back to football. So let’s do that now.
While the LA Rams have been fascinated with the comings and goings of their roster at the wide receiver position, let’s not lose sight of the fact that third-year receiver Van Jefferson is knocking loudly at the door of a thousand-yard season. After a 220-yard rookie debut, the young man exploded for over 800 yards in his second season with the Rams. So can 1000 yards be in the scope for 2022?
You would think that it should be, right? In 2021, the LA Rams had wide receivers Cooper Kupp, Odell Beckham Jr., Robert Woods, Van Jefferson, DeSean Jackson, and Ben Skowronek in the mix for the 2021 season. Through all of that, Jefferson was able to gain over 800 yards and six touchdowns among that crowded field of receivers.
The field should be far less crowded this year. Right now, the team boasts Kupp, WR Allen Robinson, Van Jefferson, and Ben Skowronek. OBJ may be back but won’t take the football field until November 2022 at the earliest. For now, there will not be any DJax splitting time with Van Jefferson early this season.
Does that mean an automatic 1000-yard season for Van Jefferson? No. But it would be surprising if he does not break that plateau.
