Pick 104

The LA Rams opened their 2022 NFL Draft by using the 104th overall pick in a surprising fashion, selecting 6-foot-5 309-pound offensive lineman Logan Bruss from the University of Wisconsin.

What does the team need for this position?

The LA Rams re-signed a number of offensive linemen but lost two starters. Andrew Whitworth retired, and offensive guard Austin Corbett signed elsewhere as a free agent.  At a bare minimum, the Rams needed to add an interior offensive lineman who could serve as a backup but also be prepared to take on a starter’s role in case of injury.

Ideally, the Rams need a young offensive lineman who can earn a starting role at right guard outright, allowing the team to configure their best backup players in positions to ensure adequate depth for the entire 2022 NFL season.

What does this rookie deliver?

Logan Bruss brings a fierceness and competitive tone to the Rams’ offensive line. He should be more than adequate as a backup and should be expected to compete for a starting role at right guard. He is solid at pass blocking, but even more than that can be a very effective run blocker as well.

He loves to make contact, and will oftentimes move on from his primary assignment to block linebackers and defensive backs downfield. He is also incredibly versatile, so even in a backup role, he becomes a player who can plug-n-play in four offensive line positions.

Instant reaction: Bruss was absolutely one of the best offensive linemen fits in this draft, and the fact that he fell to the Rams at 104 was the best scenario possible.

Draft Grade: A+. Even as a backup, Bruss is an upgrade for the LA Rams. But I would not rule out his earning the starting right guard position.
