LA Rams: Expect these 3 players to have a breakout season in 2022
Safety #26 – Terrell Burgess
The LA Rams addressed the defensive safety position twice in the 2020 NFL Draft. The first selection was using the 104th overall selection in the draft to select hybrid CB/S Terrell Burgess from the University of Utah. The second selection was using the 199th overall selection in the draft to choose S Jordan Fuller out of Ohio State University.
Fuller went on to become the starter for the team. Terrell Burgess flashed the potential to perform in multiple roles in the LA Rams secondary. But he suffered a devastating ankle injury in 2020, one that ended his season and required surgery. Since that event, Terell Burgess hasn’t quite lived up to his potential.
With injuries and a long season, Burgess was given the opportunity to play 90 regular-season snaps. It was hoped that would translate into significant playing time in the playoffs. Instead, the Rams found that backup Nick Scott paired far more effectively with veteran Eric Weddle.
Burgess wasn’t quite ready for the big game, but with some experience, this year might be his year to step up. Burgess can make his impact next season on special teams and even on the Rams’ nickel defense. Eric Weddle retired again, so that opens up some opportunity to move up on the depth chart. Also, you never have enough depth secondary, so you might see the Rams move the very versatile Burgess to cornerback for reinforcement.
