Fans of the LA Rams have become accustomed to the fact that the team does things a bit differently. Whether the topic is managing the annual NFL salary cap, to how the team perceives and uses their annually allotted NFL Draft picks, the LA Rams travel to the beat of a different drum.

Well, used to, I suppose. After the way so many teams abandoned traditional roster building and adopted the Rams picks-for-players mindset, it appears that the NFL percussion section is beating out the LA Rams beat now. And so, the Rams organization could be one of the most innovative NFL teams of the modern era. Not just for doing things differently, but for doing things in a way that results in unparalleled success.

The LA Rams are one of only two NFL teams to appear in the latest Top 25 most innovative teams in the world by Sports Innovation Lab.

What exactly does that mean? So how are teams scored for innovation? Here is their report, and the three metrics used to determine which teams are the most innovative sports teams in the world.

And so the three components are: (1) Revenue diversification (2) Technology enablement and finally, (3) Organizational agility.  Per the Sports Innovation Labs list, the Seattle Seahawks come in as the 18th-ranked most innovative sports team, while the LA Rams show up as the 21st-ranked most innovative sports team.

While the list does not share the raw data, I would expect the Rams to score highly in technology enablement and organizational agility. The one area where the Rams may be lagging is revenue diversification. Why? Well, the team is just moved to the Los Angeles area and is only now making inroads in marketing, merchandise sales, and increasing their name recognition in international markets.

You can expect the LA Rams to remain one of the most innovative NFL organizations. Leading the NFL in adopting new ways of thinking, and doing, has translated into an unprecedented streak of success. But you can also look for more and more teams to follow the LA Rams’ lead going forward as well.
