51. . . . Matthew Stafford. 2. player

We’re nearly to number one now, and you’ll probably be able to guess who he is after you discover who the number two quarterback is on this list.  My number two LA Rams quarterback in team history is Matthew Stafford.  But come back in several years, and that may change. You see, the only compelling reason not to rank Stafford number two is the short amount of time he’s been with the team. Right now, he is a one-hit-wonder.

Having only one season under his belt so far but that one season was one of the greatest single-season performances by a quarterback in team history, which all led of course to the Rams’ second franchise Super Bowl victory and fourth NFL league championship.

Of all of the quarterbacks in Rams franchise history with at least 500 pass attempts, Stafford’s passing total for 4,886 yards in one year totaled out to more than four other quarterbacks with multiple seasons with the team. The most astonishing point of it all was that it all happened in his first season with the team. Will future years be as impressive, or perhaps even better?

Super Matt

Stafford completed 67.2 percent of his passes and threw for 41 touchdowns with only 17 interceptions.  The interceptions at first glance seem like a lot and normally would be considered as such.  But this all fell within a 17-game season, the first time in NFL history that a season ran so long, and Stafford threw 601 passes.  This gives him an interception rate that comes in at a mere 2.8 percent, good enough for the third-lowest rate in team history.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford is only 34 years old, an age that means that he could realistically play in this league for another four to six years. With the incredible stats that he put up in just his first season, really raise the bar for Stafford’s career potential with the Rams in this offense.

The numbers Stafford has the opportunity to put up will likely crush multiple passing records.  He has the chance with this team to add more wins, division titles, and possibly even more Super Bowl victories.  If Stafford helps lead this team to another Super Bowl, with similar or better numbers after next season, we could very well be revisiting this top 5 list and realistically resetting the order to place Matthew Stafford into the top spot.  But for the time being, the number one spot belongs to another, not named Matthew Stafford.
