LA Rams News Kurt Warner
7. Kurt Warner, St. Louis Rams (1998)

I don’t think many will question whether quarterback Kurt Warner deserves to be the number one quarterback in Rams franchise history.  Warner’s numbers were impressive and his story as an American Underdog is one of the greatest stories in NFL history, let alone Rams history.

Kurt Warner was with the St. Louis Rams from 1998 to 2003, and during that time amassed 14,447 yards, which is only sixth in team history.  His average yards per game is a very impressive 272.6 yards per game, which is second only to Matthew Stafford.  Warner tossed 102 touchdowns for a 6 percent rate, good enough for third-best in Rams franchise history.  His 3.9 percent interception rate puts him in the top 10 for the franchise, specifically at the eighth spot,  but his yards per attempt were 8.6 yards, tops in team history.

Warner also helped lead the team to a 70 percent winning percentage during his starts and more importantly, led the team to two Super Bowl appearances, in 2000 and again in 2002, winning the first.  He was voted to three NFC Pro Bowls and was also honored by appearing on two NFL All-Pro rosters.  He was also awarded Super Bowl XXXIV MVP honors, as well as being a two-time NFL MVP in 1999 and 2001.

Wonderful Warner

Warner also owns three of the top six passing yard totals in Super Bowls, though one of those three was with the Arizona Cardinals, so even if we exclude that, he still owns the third and sixth most passing yards in Super Bowls with the Rams. Only New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has passed for more yards in a single Super Bowl.

During the Rams’ Super Bowl appearance which followed the 1999 season, Warner threw for 1,063 yards in three postseason games, which was an NFL record at that time.  This number has since been passed (no pun intended) eight times, including Warner himself in 2008 with the Arizona Cardinals, when he passed for 1,147 yards, which is good enough for third best.  Interestingly, Matthew Stafford just passed this mark last season when he passed for 1,188 yards in the 2021 postseason.  Will Stafford surpass Kurt Warner soon as the number one quarterback in Rams franchise history?  Only time will tell.

In the meantime, I’m going to have fun watching.
