We have talked about LA Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, defensive lineman Aaron Donald, and even wide receiver Cooper Kupp in terms of All-Time Rams Franchise records. But when will we talk about the fact that the current LA Rams head coach, Sean McVay, has already skyrocketed up the Rams’ All-Time Winningest Coach rankings to claim third place.
In just five seasons, McVay has already led this team to more victories than some great coaches who have earned a place of reverence among LA Rams fans. His 55 victories are two and a have times greater than Rams legendary head coach Dick Vermeil, who led the team to 22 wins. He has led the team to more victories than legendary head coach Ray Malavasi (40), George Allen (49), or even Mike Martz (53).
In fact, only two former Rams head coaches remain ahead of him on the wins list: John Robinson at 75 wins, and “Ground” Chuck Knox at 69 victories. That is a pretty elite crowd for McVay to already stand among, and there are no signs of his slowing down his pace anytime soon.
McVay is on his way
While George Allens’ win percentage (74.2 percent wins) remains tops among LA Rams coaches in the Super Bowl era, McVay’s seven playoff wins already dwarfs that of other coaches. Only John Robinson’s four playoff wins are close enough to be in the discussion.
So when will McVay top John Robinson’s total of 75 wins? Well, he has averaged 11 wins per season, so the math of the matter would indicate that he could best all former coaches at the end of the 2023 season. Not only would that make him the winningest coach at 77 games, but would be the fastest amount of time needed to achieve such lofty heights. John Robinson needed nine seasons to win 75 games, while Chuck Knox needed eight seasons to win 69 games.
At 55 wins this year, McVay will likely need two seasons to advance on the list. That means that the 2022 and 2023 seasons will need to be just as successful to accomplish that landmark feat. And with both quarterback Matthew Stafford and defensive lineman Aaron Donald under contract, McVay appears to have a pretty good odds of doing so.
