Exactly how long will the LA Rams SB window stay open?
By Bret Stuter
The LA Rams have had HC Sean McVay at the helm for five NFL seasons. Over that time, these LA Rams have appeared in the Super Bowl twice, and have now won once. His regular-season record as head coach of the LA Rams is 55-26. His post-season record is 7-3. That includes the 4-0 NFL Playoffs run that led to winning SB LVI.
So here’s something that is a line of thought that I have not pondered so far this year. With all of the talk about key players and coaches mentioning the R-word: Retirement, exactly how long will this LA Rams‘ window of opportunity to compete for and win Super Bowls remain open? Until now, I would have placed an estimation of six to seven years, at least up until 2030.
But NFL Insider Jason La Canfora (formerly of CBS Sports) has a far more pessimistic view.
McVay and Donald out in two to three years? That seems very . . . wrong.
What is the correct answer?
So that now begs the question. Exactly how long with the LA Rams SB window stay open? Well, to be fair, the reality is that as long as the team has head coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead running the show, I’d go with the belief that this team will always be in competition for a Lombardi.
But am I looking through Rams’ royal blue and sol yellow-colored glasses? It is conceivable that these Rams have flashed their luck and roster-building skills in one flash like a light bulb, and now the team is on a slow burn to anonymity. But the LA Rams have been in far worse shape than they are right now.
Entering the 2020 NFL season, the team was facing a season with one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL, a wide receiver who was one concussion away from ending his NFL career, a running back whose knees were giving out on him, and a young quarterback who could not make his progression reads. Two years later, a Super Bowl? That’s right. But now that the team has tasted the ultimate victory, are they hungry enough to try again? Or will the LA Rams suffer from a Post-Lombardi letdown?
