Step IV: Extend key contributors

The LA Rams are built a bit differently, and Rams fans have simply come to accept that fact without batting an eyelash. In fact, it’s become part of the team’s genetic code. Few other NFL teams give serious consideration to the likelihood of swinging for the fences with free agency signings, NFL trades, or even the rumors of such.

But in the same breath, this team inspires fans to great optimism in the NFL Draft, despite not having enjoyed a Round 1 pick in the past five seasons. Undrafted free agent rookies are scrutinized for their NFL potential, not just treated as personnel pylons to fill the roster for training camp. This is a team that has accepted the fact that the Rams build their roster from the top-down and from the bottom-up. Even more importantly, fans have become very supportive of this unique method of building an NFL Championship roster.

Give me something to believe in

The Rams have gotten several things right that many teams have not. For starters, NFL players want to win. So they expect their team to do whatever is required to make the team competitively positioned to make a Super Bowl run each year.  Players expect the team to acquire new

The LA Rams do more than just acquire talent. This is an organization that seeks, acquires, and then cares for elite NFL game-changers in such a way that their entire organization benefits. Then, the LA Rams take care of those players.

The LA Rams entered the off-season committing to rework the now obsolete contracts of QB Matthew Stafford, DL Aaron Donald, and WR Cooper Kupp. To fans, it’s just one more example of how the NFL is more about players demanding money than the reality of players needing the reassurance that their pain-staking high-risk efforts are appreciated. Competitors seek competition, sometimes at the expense of other aspects of their lives.

The Rams are an organization that speaks honestly with players, but also promotes their careers as well. While all NFL teams are more than willing to trade, cut, or renegotiate contracts with players due to underperformance, few teams are willing to sit down to renegotiate a contract with players due to overperformance. The LA Rams are such a team.
