III – DL Bobby Brown III

Despite a subdued and quiet rookie season, I believe that Bobby Brown III will have his ducks in a row this year. The LA Rams defensive line is not part of a participation award package for rookies. Defensive line coach Eric Henderson has a knack for getting the best out of his players. Doing so means that he will not lower the bar just to help some players get over it to the next level.

Brown was the rookie who had the chance to meet and play alongside his NFL hero, Aaron Donald. That’s a bit unsettling for a rookie who is already trying to focus on making the roster.

It may have taken Brown some time to get acclimated to the regimen of the LA Rams rotation but look for big things from him this year.  While he is playing behind what is arguably the best NFL defensive starting line in Aaron Donald, A’Shawn Robinson, and Greg Gaines, this is a long 17-game season.

Primary priority

Brown is also on track for an expanded role because the contracts of both Robinson and Gaines expire at the end of this year. While there is always a chance for the Rams to find sufficient funds to re-sign one of the two, the likelihood for the team to retain both veterans just seems unlikely at this point.

That makes Bobby Brown a developmental priority in training camp, and I think he is already well on his way to stepping up. His timetable was derailed a year ago with thumb surgery in training camp. This year, he has less urgency to hit a timetable, but more urgency to hit his developmental marks. I expect him to hit them all, and assume a solid backup DL role similar to that filled by Greg Gaines in the past.
