LA Rams: A look at the team’s 2023 NFL Draft outlook
By Steve Rivera
Quarterback need
The LA Rams will want to bolster their quarterback depth, hopefully, sooner rather than later. With a deep quarterback class projected for the 2023 NFL Draft, and with LA Rams veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford possibly being injury prone, the time may be right.
The LA Rams know that backup quarterback John Wolford is in the last year of his contract. He will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2022 NFL season. The other quarterback on the roster, Bryce Perkins, projects to become an Exclusive Rights Free Agent (ERFA) after this year. While it’s likely that the team re-signs Perkins, they may consider the draft as a possible source for a young quarterback to join the roster. But who is the right prospect?
The Rams only need to look to Northern California to find the right quarterback. Stanford Cardinal quarterback Tanner McKee is an ideal guy to learn under head coach Sean McVay and be the future hurler in the Rams offense.
McKee may be the LA Rams’next QB
Born on April 27 in Irvine, CA, the Stanford Cardinal standout has the prototypical measurements that make him ideal for the NFL game. At 6-foot-6 and weighing in at 226-pounds, McKee will be durable in the Rams’ pocket.
McKee spent two years on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before playing at Stanford. His first season with the Cardinal team was 2020, in which he played a cameo role in one game, completing just three passes for 62 yards against then 12th-ranked Oregon.
McKee competed with Stanford quarterback Jack West for the starting job in 2021. Although West started during the season opener against Kansas State, the McKee still appeared in the game and attempted 18 passes, completing 15 of them for 118 yards and a touchdown. He was named the starter for the following week’s game against the University of Southern California.
In just his fourth collegiate start, McKee led the unranked Cardinal team to a miraculous upset victory against the then third-ranked Oregon Ducks, throwing three touchdowns and spearheading an 87-yard game-tying drive at the end of the fourth quarter.
