The LA Rams defense has a lot of elite talent among the starting 11, but there is a lot to be said for the Rams’ defensive depth. After all, the team has intentionally built this Rams roster on the young and often overlooked talent over the past five seasons. One such player who has not gotten his share of positive press is defensive end, Jonah Williams.

Williams is the player who started the 2021 NFL season, but due to the numbers game was released to open a roster spot. That led to his being claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Vikings, but he was released once more after failing his on-boarding physical. The LA Rams re-signed the defensive end to the team’s practice squad where he remained for the 2021 NFL season.

Williams had a good preseason in 2021 and appears to be stepping up to show an even better preseason in 2022. He was not very active in the LA Rams’ first preseason game, but he’s determined to show up in the highlight reel.

Rams roster wide open at DL

There is good reason to push hard right now. While the Rams defensive starters are locked in, there is plenty at stake for the Rams backups. Not only do younger LA Rams defenders have real opportunities to push for a roster spot this year, but there is more at stake. After all, there are a number of expiring contracts with the Rams’ defensive linemen at the end of this season. Players who put up good numbers on the defensive line this season will be in line for either a contract renewal or a larger role on the defense next season.

Clearly, Jonah Williams is determined to put up a very compelling body of work to be right in the mix of any discussion for roster spots and playing time in the future.

Williams has a huge strip sack that resulted in a 23-yard loss for the Texans’ starting offense. While that has been one of the multiple key-defensive plays by the Rams, it was the play that placed the Houston Texans on their heels after the Rams put up the first three points on the scoreboard.
