The trial of 80 LA Rams players is now over. The defense rests for the LA Rams now. For that matter, so too do the offense and special teams. The LA Rams roster must be pared down to a 53-man roster by 1:00 pm PT on Tuesday, August 30, 2022. In some regards, the easy part is over. Now? The tough decision-making process begins.

The trick is that the Rams are loaded with wide receivers and with defensive backs. Of course, that is to be expected, right? After all, the Rams roster was clobbered with injuries at both positions last season. In fact, the carnage was so bad that the team signed free agent Odell Beckham Jr. just in time to compensate for the season-ending injury to dependable wide receiver Robert Woods.

In terms of the Rams’ secondary, who can ignore the fact that the team had to lure formerly retired defensive back Eric Weddle out of retirement to play for the Rams in the NFL Playoffs? Weddle earned his ring and ended up with a lifelong memory for the effort, but he clearly has no intention to answer the phone if the Rams need secondary help this year.

But even as the Rams tend to reinforce positions that were unacceptably thin last season, the team must ensure adequate depth throughout the roster. That will make many of the team’s roster decisions particularly difficult this year, as the team has been very effective in finding NFL-caliber talent in the later rounds of the NFL Draft, as well as from among the ranks of undrafted rookies.

Compounding the Rams’ roster enigma is the fact that many of the team’s rookies from 2021 were injured, and are eager to earn a roster spot this season.

So who stays and who goes? We’ll be tracking each and every roster move through the deadline. We also will track the Rams roster signings to the practice squad that immediately follows paring down to the 53-man roster:
