Crazy Claim I: Matthew Stafford will throw three touchdowns.

There has been a lot of chatter about the Buffalo Bills’ top-ranked defense from 2021, and how the addition of former Rams outside linebacker Von Miller has made that defense that much better. But let’s toss in a little professional skepticism to those bold claims.

The NFL schedulers pitted the Buffalo Bills against their own division, the NFC south, and the AFC South. To cut right to the chase, the teams that the Bills faced last season were anything but offensive powerhouses.  The Bills faced the New York Jets twice, and that 28th-ranked scoring offense. They also faced the Jacksonville Jaguars (32nd-ranked scoring offense) and the Houston Texans (30th-ranked scoring offense).

When the Bills faced a Top-10 offense, they allowed 94 points in three games or an average of 31 points per game. Hardly something to write home about. So let’s try to keep it all in perspective. The Bills’ defense can be tough, but that definitely depends on the offense that they face. Just like the ranking of all 32 teams.

While I expect that the Rams will mix up the play calling between the 20-yard lines, I truly expect the Rams to pass in the red zone. And if the Rams are able to get some success in the running game, the Bills’ defense will be forced to guess at how the Rams plan to attack them near the end zone.

The Rams have plenty of aerial weapons for this one, and they could put a score into the outstretched arms of Cooper Kupp, Allen Robinson, Tyler Higbee, Brycen Hopkins, or even a streaking Tutu Atwell.

To open the 2021 season, Matthew Stafford tossed a TD to Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, and Van Jefferson for the Rams’ three passing TDs. I’m willing to bet that the pattern repeats itself this year, but will go to Kupp, Robinson, and Higbee.
