Optimistic Observation I: Stafford and Kupp still have great chemistry

The LA Rams offense may not have had a great game, but veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford continues to enjoy unprecedented success with wide receiver Cooper Kupp. It’s a partnership that was forged throughout the adversity of the 2021 NFL season, and until it sours, will continue throughout the 2022 NFL season.

And it shows no signs of souring or letting up anytime soon.

In Week 1, Kupp caught 13 of 15 passes for 128 yards and one touchdown. To show the bigger picture, the LA Rams TOTAL offense put up just 243 total yards and 10 points. So the Matthew Stafford to Cooper Kupp connection that was so important to the LA Rams offense in the NFL Playoffs is even more critical to the Rams offense in the first game in 2022.

Is that really what the Rams should be doing?

The obvious answer is no. Stafford to Kupp is an elite connection, a vital ability to move the football in case of emergency. If the Rams exhaust that weapon this early, the team will eventually put enough on tape to allow defensive coordinators the means to defend them.

But for now, the Rams still have one lifeline that will ensure points will go on the scoreboard.  After a chaotic Week 1, that’s got to count for something, right? It’s the type of offensive spark that can turn the momentum of a football game. But let’s not be overstating the matter. The Rams still need to get physical, establish the running game, and get other receivers involved in the offense.

Then, and only then, the Stafford to Kupp will work its magic. But it’s awfully nice to know that they still got it.
