I was stoked to learn that the LA Rams had signed free agent wide receiver Allen Robinson. He seemed to be the ideal next offensive weapon to add to the ever-diversifying offense that the LA Rams were building around veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford.

The Rams had the possession guy in WR Cooper Kupp. The Rams had the speedy guys covered by WR Van Jefferson and Tutu Atwell. And by adding Allen Robinson, the Rams appeared to shore up the contested catches category by pairing Robinson with WR Ben Skowronek.

But, three games into the 2022 NFL season, the Rams appear to have gotten more of a Josh Reynolds type of receiver than an Odell Beckham Jr. type of receiver.  Allen Robinson is an NFL veteran wide receiver who is entering his ninth NFL season. So how’s he doing? Let’s look at his current performance for the guy with the Rams’ offense so far.

Career average? Or unlocked potential?

His career catch rate is 58.3 percent. His 2022 catch rate is 58.3 percent. His career yards per reception is 12.9. His current yards per reception is 12. 6. His career average number of touchdowns per season is five touchdowns. His current pace for touchdowns is five touchdowns. In his career, he has been averaging 812 yards per season. This season, he is on pace to finish the season at 500 yards.

So I have to ask. Is this as good as it gets?

While I don’t have an instant answer, I will caution going to extremes just three games into the season. The LA Rams have not made it easy for Robinson to get into the flow so far. He has only been targetted 12 times and hauled in seven catches for 88 yards and one touchdown. In terms of offensive usage, Robinson is more like a WR4. The Rams have thrown to WR Cooper Kupp 35 times, to TE Tyler Higbee 24 times, and to FB/WR Ben Skowronek 13 times.

We should point out that only Robinson and Kupp have scored touchdown receptions for the Rams offense so far this year.
