The goal is never to accumulate picks but to accumulate talent

How many offensive linemen have been signed to the LA Rams roster since the season began? If you said a number less than five, then you have missed one or more additions. The Rams have added:

  1. IOL Oday Aboushi
  2. IOL Matt Skura
  3. OT Ty Nsekhe
  4. OT Zachary Thomas
  5. IOL Cole Turner

Of that group, how many offensive linemen from the 2023 NFL Draft will be on the board when the LA Rams make their selections who can outplay this group of five offensive linemen? Perhaps even more importantly, how many rookies who declare for the draft can be better than the wave of injured LA Rams offensive linemen who are returning to health next season?

The embedded bias of fans towards the thrill of the NFL Draft

The perspective of fans holds an unintended bias thanks to the incredible NFL marketing of their annual NFL Draft. Not all prospects who are selected in the first round pan out. Not every team who has more picks in an NFL draft wins the following season. And perhaps worst of all, rookies are nefariously worse in their first NFL season than even an average veteran. For every Creed Humphrey who is drafted and is an immediate success, there are dozens of Bobby Evans who are added to an NFL roster, compete for playing time, and through no fault of his own fail to develop into the role intend for him to fulfill on his NFL team.

We know that it takes time to learn the plays, the teammates, the coaches, and the culture of a new NFL team. The Rams’ 2022 NFL season proved that even venerable veterans like WR Odell Beckham Jr, RB Sony Michel, and even OLB Von Miller are not plug-and-play success stories.

The ability to pivot from college to professional football makes the challenge far more difficult for rookies. To bypass that, the LA Rams organization has been content and successful at deploying its own cheat code. By trading valuable draft picks for game-changing talent, the Rams have found a way to get instantly impacting players on their roster, and push the risk of whiffing at draft selections to their trading partners.
