Rams latest PS addition adds enticing option for 2023 NFL season

But Brock brings what?
Okay, so how does signing Brock Miller to the LA Rams practice squad help the Rams ever? Well, he is not a rookie, per se, as he was undrafted in the 2014 NFL Draft out of Southern Utah State. This 5-foot-11 185-pound punter is 31 years old and is left-footed, which is itself a bit of a wrinkle to his NFL prospects.
He has been trying out for NFL teams for years and did land a spot with the San Francisco 49ers practice squad in 2017. He has had some experience in both the XFL and USFL leagues, rather recently. He played one season for the XFL Seattle Dragons and averaged 42.1 yards per punt in 2020. He followed that up with a year for the USFL New Jersey Generals in 2022 and averaged 46.1 yards per punt for them.
Booming Brock Miller’s monster punt
The highlight of his USFL season was a monster 85-yard punt that has to be seen to be believed:
Can you imagine getting that from a Rams punter? While this is certainly a news piece that few will notice, I would not be so quick to oversimplify this signing. As shown above, the Rams are doing due diligence by bringing aboard a name that is quite popular among NFL teams right now.
He was signed by the LA Rams in 2017 to a Reserve/Future contract, and then again in 2019 through training camp. Miller joins former USFL players QB Case Cookus (Philadelphia Stars), DE TJ Carter (Michigan Panthers), and WR Lance Lenoir (Michigan Panthers) through two more weeks of the 2022 NFL season.
Do the Rams suddenly like former USFL players? It certainly appears to be the latest trend. For now, there may be nothing more than just one more depth player on the roster. But the Rams seldom do moves for immediate gratification alone. I wouldn’t be surprised if the team signs Miller to a Reserve/Future contract and gives him a chance to become the Rams punter in 2023.
