I can honestly say that I am loving this latest version of LA Rams head coach Sean McVay more and more. Even as LA Rams fans push back on articles about the trials and travails of Rams Coach McVay, I am fascinated by the transformation that he has, is, and will undertake after enduring a 5-12 season.

Headline surveying is far too common nowadays. But I’m hooked on learning the why in NFL events, particularly when those events involve the LA Rams, as the what. This is one of those attempts to indulge me more in the why behind LA Rams HC Sean McVay’s thought process. And I, for one, am glad that I did.

Fox Sports NFL Insider Jay Glazer is connected to the LA Rams, and he shared his latest interactions with Coach McVay as part of the Fox Sports NFL pregame program. His report enlightened and clarified Coch McVay’s mindset:

In the end, Coach McVay walked away from the NFL with uncertainty, confusion, and lost. But in a very short time, his support group has pointed him back in the right direction, has held his hand, but most importantly, has reassured the still young Rams head coach Sean McVay over who he truly is.

I want to run through adversity

And who is that? In his own words, as reported by Glazer:
. . . It became clear to me, I don’t want to run away from adversity. I want to run through it.”

So what?  Well, it tells me two things about Coach McVay that I did not know before. First of all, it could mean that there is a new sheriff in town in terms of the offense. Delegate play calling? Committing to the running game? Installing more power back/fullback plays in the offensive playbook? I think that all are back on the table for the LA Rams.

But it could also mean that Coach McVay will be less likely to stick with failed strategies. Passing almost exclusively into the teeth of the NFL’s best pass defenses may be a thing of the past. And that could be great news for RB Cam Akers, who is clearly back on track.

In truth, I don’t know what this new version of Coach McVay will bring, but I do know one thing. He sounds like he’s going to have a lot of fun in the 2023 NFL season. Better yet, I’m going to have a lot of fun watching what he does with the team next season.
