The LA Rams may not have a head coach controversy right now, but that does not mean that the Rams are not affected by the latest events in terms of the NFL head coach hirings taking place right now.  The NFL had five head coaching positions to fill this off-season. As is often the case, teams have been scooping up their favorite candidates rather quickly.

Which teams have hired their head coach?

Carolin Panthers – New HC Frank Reich
Denver Broncos –  Rumored new HC Sean Payton
Houston Texans – (see below)
Arizona Cardinals – TBD
Indianapolis Colts – TBD

With the Houston Texans now rumored to have reached an agreement to hire 49ers defensive coordinator as their head coach, the NFL is now down to just two NFL teams with head coach vacancies: The Indianapolis Colts and the Arizona Cardinals.

While the Colts have already conducted their second round of interviews, the Cardinals have had a number of top candidates balk. They (the Cardinals) were heavily interested in Dallas Cowboys DC Dan Quinn, who withdrew his name from consideration. The Arizona Cardinals were also believed to be very interested in New Orleans Saints’ former head coach Sean Payton, but Payton is not rumored to be on his way to the Denver Broncos.

So who do the Cardinals have in their sights now?

The Indianapolis Colts have reportedly done the most extensive search and Rams DC Raheem Morris is still in the running. In fact, his interview ran well into the evening hours, a very good sign that conversations were progressing nicely. While that may please some Rams fans, there is a strong likelihood that he could lure former Broncos DC Ejiro Everon to the Colts to take over as their new defensive coordinator role.

If Morris is hired by the Colts, the Rams’ short list of potential defensive coordinators will need to be revised.  But it will end the uncertainty once and for all, and allow the Rams to speed up their own coaching hires.
